NC Museum of Art Presents 'You Are Here: Light, Color, and Sound Experiences'

RALEIGH, N.C. — This spring the North Carolina Museum of Art opens You Are Here: Light, Color, and Sound Experiences. The exhibition features 20 immersive installations from 14 international contemporary artists that take over an entire floor of the Museum and spill out into the Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park, open April 7 through July 22, 2018. Special related events, including an opening weekend “all-nighter” slate of parties and programming, are listed below.

You Are Here presents pioneering video, light, and sound installations by Bill Viola, James Turrell, Janet Cardiff, Olafur Eliasson, and Ragnar Kjartansson. Works by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Jim Campbell, and Theo Eshetu employ experimental technology, custom electronics, and digital media. Mixed-media installations by Anila Quayyum Agha, Soo Sunny Park, Mickalene Thomas, and Heather Gordon use low-tech, nontraditional materials. You Are Here also takes visitors outdoors to explore large-scale video projects by Austria-based artist collective OMAi and two interactive outdoor sculptures by Sam Falls.

The exhibition’s first night features a silent disco party followed by extended “all-nighter” hours; after the opening party, the exhibition remains open from midnight to 10 am with special programming, performances, and food and drinks. On Sunday, April 8, featured artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer gives a talk sponsored by the Museum Docent Lecture Endowment and the Robert Lee Humber Lecture Endowment.

Additional special events throughout the exhibition include yoga in the galleries and a two-week projection art residency with OMAi, along with workshops, talks, and art-making experiences. The full list of programming can be found below and online at ncartmuseum.org/here. Visitors are encouraged to share their experiences in the exhibition by tagging @ncartmuseum on social media and using hashtag #NCMAhere.
