BELMONT, N.C. — Orchids offer some of the most captivating and exotic flowers on the planet. To celebrate these plants, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden invites guests to “Join the Expedition” at its upcoming Orchid Spectacular, during which, it will host the North Carolina Piedmont Orchid Society (NCPOS) Show & Sale, February 24 - 26.
NCPOS Show & Sale is an event that is juried and sanctioned by the American Orchid Society (AOS), and brings together orchid societies and individual growers from both Carolinas, who create themed displays to show off their most prized orchids.
The event begins Feb. 24 at noon, when the AOS judges scrutinize hundreds of orchid varieties and then present ribbons to the region’s best orchids. It also includes the sale of orchids and orchid supplies from the region’s most respected growers. In addition, throughout the event guests will be able to speak with experts who can answer questions about these fascinating plants and give advice on growing, caring for and nurturing orchids at home. The show begins following judging at noon Jan. 24 and ends at 5 p.m., Feb. 26.
This year’s NCPOS Show & Sale follows the theme “Orchid Expedition: Celebrate the Allure,” and The Garden follows suit by transforming The Orchid Conservatory into a 19th century orchid hunting ground so guests can feel as if they are on an orchid expedition. Featuring expedition gear, canoes and tents, visitors will get to see what it was like to suffer from Orchidelirium -- the Victorian name given to those who suffered the orchid equivalent of “gold fever.”
With garden admission, photographers are invited to bring their tripods for a special orchid photo session on Sunday, Feb. 26, 9 - 11 a.m.
Orchid Spectacular runs Jan. 20 - March 18. During this time, Garden guests will be able to view some of the world’s most stunning varieties of orchids in the Garden’s acclaimed Orchid Conservatory. Here the garden displays fascinating orchids from around the globe in a fashion that combines botanical splendor with creative artistry.
Orchid Spectacular is sponsored by Rodgers Builders. Except where noted, “Orchid Spectacular” is free with Garden admission. Members are free; adults, $12; seniors 60+, $11; and children 4-12, $6. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. For more visit www.DSBG.org or call 704-825-4490.
