Black River Cruises with N.C. Audubon Tour Guides Reveal Cape Fear's Natural Wonders
Cape Fear Coast, N.C. - Did you know that alligators, bobcats, black bear, river otters, rare birds and other wildlife live in the wilderness around Wilmington and North Carolina’s Cape Fear Coast? These are just a few of the surprises in store for visitors who sign up for a Black River Nature Cruise with Cape Fear Riverboats. This relaxing and educational four-hour cruise offers narrated plant and wildlife interpretation by educators with Audubon North Carolina. Cruisers should prepare to be amazed by the tranquility, breathtaking scenery, and amazing wildlife along the northeast Cape Fear River and Black River.
In September and October, experience the beauty and natural history of the Cape Fear region during a narrated nature cruise along scenic and historic coastal waterways aboard the Captain J.N. Maffitt. Nature enthusiasts and photographers can enjoy thrilling Black River Nature Cruises in September (16 & 30) and October (14 & 28). Just minutes after leaving the dock, passengers will experience a river that appears almost as it did to the early explorers. This sense of remoteness sets the stage for relaxation for those who enjoy observing and interacting with nature.
Located just outside New Hanover County, the Black River is a treat year-round. Adventure travelers will cruise up the Cape Fear River to the wilds of the Black River, one of the cleanest waterways in the state. Renowned for its wildlife and scenic wilderness, the Black River is truly a photographer’s paradise.
Each nature cruise is unique as passengers may encounter a variety of animals, including alligators, snakes, bobcats, river otters, black bear, deer, fox, and rare species of neo-tropical songbirds. Rare fish species also inhabit the waters. The Audubon North Carolina tour guide shares a wealth of knowledge about these and other native animals.
Passengers will also learn about the area’s natural flora. The slow-moving, dark amber-colored stream is surrounded by 1,700-year-old bald cypresses draped with Spanish moss and the oldest known trees east of the Rocky Mountains: black gum, tupelo gum, water hickory, American Elm, longleaf pines, turkey oaks and other oak species.
