Point Lookout Blends Sweeping Mountain Views and Quality Wines

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — North Carolina’s newest winery, Point Lookout Vineyards, offers sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet high on Point Lookout Mountain.

Owner Mike Jackson carefully planned the winery to include a 4,000-square-foot open-air pavilion that serves as both a tasting room and event space. The Pavilion is crafted from hand-hewn cedar logs from British Columbia and includes an additional tasting room, kitchen and dressing suites. Adjoining the Pavilion is a patio with a large fire pit and a spacious event lawn used for weddings and concerts featuring 270-degree panoramic mountain views.

“This land has been in my family for three generations and I wanted to create a special place where people can enjoy great wine, beautiful scenery and special times with family and friends. In addition to weddings, we will host live music, chef’s dinners and other memorable events,” Jackson said. “Our tagline is, ‘Thirty-mile views. Even longer memories.’”

The winery offers a selection of 10 dry and semi-sweet wines crafted from such grapes as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling. The grapes are grown on the estate and the wines are made at Windsor Run Cellars in Hamptonville.

“We’ve been growing grapes since 2008 and have some on-site winemaking, but it’s mostly experimental to perfect my craft and try different varieties on a small-scale level,” Jackson said.

The ten wines offered include six reds and four whites. The reds are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé, Petit Verdot, Cliffield (a red blend), and Javine, a coffee and chocolate infused red that is a nod to the owner’s Jackson’s Java coffee shops in Charlotte. The tasting room will include Jackson’s espresso and coffee paired with food items.

The white wines consist of a barrel fermented Chardonnay, stainless steel Chardonnay, dry Riesling and an off-dry Riesling. The off-dry Riesling captured the award for best white wine at the 2018 North Carolina Fine Wines Competition.

Point Lookout also offers a full lineup of meads. The seven meads are traditional wildflower and orange blossom, plus apple, raspberry, tropical fruit, chamomile, and chai tea.

“When it comes to drinking mead, our selection provides a delightful adventure whether somebody is a novice or connoisseur of mead,” Jackson said.
